Act safely immediately after a collision

At the scene of a collision, people’s safety is more important than moving the vehicle. Stop in the safest possible place, switch on the hazard warning lights and check whether anyone is injured. Call the emergency number 112 if anyone is injured, there is an immediate danger, traffic is dangerously obstructed or the emergency services are required.
Warn other traffic and wear a high-visibility vest where possible. Place the warning triangle far enough from the collision scene to give other road users time to react. Do not put yourself at risk by walking on a busy carriageway, and do not move a seriously injured person unless they are in immediate danger. The general emergency response order is to assess the situation, prevent further collisions and call for help.

When should an accident-damaged car be recovered?

An accident-damaged car should be recovered whenever there is any doubt about whether it is roadworthy. Do not continue the journey if fluid is leaking, a wheel is at an angle, a tyre is rubbing against the bodywork, the steering is not working normally or detached parts are hanging beneath the car. A deployed airbag, broken windscreen, damaged light or severely crushed bumper can also make driving dangerous.
Not all damage is visible from the outside. An impact may have damaged the radiator, suspension arms, electrical system, traction battery or safety structures. In particular, do not touch a damaged high-voltage system in an electric or hybrid vehicle. Tell the towing company during the call if the vehicle is electric, four-wheel drive, lowered, a van or otherwise different from a standard passenger car.

Does insurance cover recovery of an accident-damaged car?

Recovery of an accident-damaged car is a commonly covered claim expense for comprehensive motor insurance customers, but the word “comprehensive” alone does not guarantee reimbursement. The scope of comprehensive policies, excesses, towing cover and ordering requirements vary between insurers and insurance products.
Comprehensive motor insurance usually includes collision cover, which may compensate for damage caused to your own vehicle in an impact. Recovery may instead be covered by roadside assistance, towing or journey interruption cover. According to FINE, customers must always check the precise scope of their insurance in their own policy terms because comprehensive cover varies between insurers. Insurers’ towing instructions may also differ, for example in relation to the excess and the choice of garage.

If another party is responsible for the collision, damage to the innocent party’s vehicle is generally handled under the motor liability insurance of the vehicle that caused the accident. This may also include necessary and reasonable recovery costs connected with the incident. Liability may nevertheless be divided if both parties are considered to have contributed to the accident. According to the Finnish Motor Insurers’ Centre, the innocent party’s vehicle damage in a collision is compensated from the liable party’s motor liability insurance, but the decision always depends on an investigation of the incident.
